A BRIEF HISTORY OF DISC GOLF

Disc Golf originated in the early 1900s. The first game was held in Canada in 1927 when Ronald Gibson and a group of friends played a game of throwing lids into 4-foot wide circles drawn on their school grounds. They called the game Tin Lid Golf.

Modern disc golf did not emerge until the early 1960s and has evolved rapidly over the years subsequent. Disc golf has evolved throughout the years by adapting the targets with everything from telephone poles, trash cans, empty kegs tied to trees, and even trees themselves.Today, the sport is gaining popularity and national attention. The Professional Disc Golf Association held the first World Championship Tournament in 1982. The largest tournament today is the United States Disc Golf Championship held annually in Houston, Texas.

The sport of disc golf is growing exponentially and is considered the fourth fastest growing sport in the United States behind mixed martial arts, roller derby, and parkour. Part of the growth is attributable to the ease of access. Casual, amatuer, and professional players are growing in numbers daily.

There are currently 8,854 disc golf courses in 128 different countries. The United States boasts the largest number of courses with 6,652 in total.
